Research

Our staff focus on basic historical research of Slovak and Czechoslovak history in the broader context of European history. They focus mainly on applied research – the creation of history textbooks for primary and secondary schools and the conservation of cultural heritage. Members of the department have participated in numerous Slovak and international research grants and organized or co-organized Slovak and international conferences. They also publish the history journal Acta historica Neosoliensia. Between 1997 and 2003, the department published several history textbooks for secondary vocational schools. The department staff publish the results of their wide-ranging scholarly activities in books, monographs (almost 50 publications in the last 17 years), studies, articles and reviews in both Slovak and foreign periodicals, as well as the annual department journal Acta historica Neosoliensia (so far 13 issues have been published).

The research performance of the department has been recognised and the department was integrated into the Centre of Excellence of the Slovak Academy of Sciences for the research of key questions in modern Slovak history on January 1, 2007.

The department has long cooperated with the Central Slovak Museum in Banská Bystrica, the Museum of the Slovak National Uprising in Banská Bystrica, the Institute of History of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, and the Institute of Military History in Bratislava, along with other fellow Slovak history departments. We also cooperate with long-time international partners – similar departments in Poland (Opole, Katowice, Kielce, Krakow and Warsaw), the Czech Republic (Brno, České Budějovice, Hradec Králové, Liberec, Opava, Ostrava, Pardubice, Plzeň, Ústí nad Labem) and Hungary (Budapest, Eger, Miskolc, Szeged), and Romania (Suceava). Between 2002 and 2004, we also began to cooperate with history institutes at universities in France (Rennes, Paris-Versailles and Grenoble). The cooperation comprises the exchange of publication activities, lectures and collaborative research, as well as student and teacher exchanges.
