Department of Philosophy

The Department of Philosophy at the Faculty of Arts of Matej Bel University (MBU) in Banská Bystrica is one of the few departments in Slovakia which endorses systematic approach to philosophy instead of historical. Our principal subjects and areas of study are metaphysics, epistemology, methodology of science, political and social philosophy, philosophy of language, philosophy of science, aesthetics, and philosophy of art. The department has successfully obtained grants for its research, the results of which are regularly published in Slovak and foreign academic journals.

The Department of Philosophy rates among the best at the Faculty of Arts. We offer study programmes at the bachelor's (Bc.) and master's (Mgr.) levels. We mainly offer philosophy in combination with another subject (usually history, English, German or Slovak), but we also offer Philosophy as its own branch of study. At the doctoral (PhD) level, Systematic Philosophy programme is offered.

Since 1995 the department has regularly organized academic conferences, symposia and colloquia focused on research funded by grant agencies. The department's recent activities have been predominated by events with international participants (including H. Ben-Yami and prof. F. Houranszki from Central European University in Budapest; prof. P. Kampitz from the Institute of Philosophy at the University of Vienna; prof. J. Gajda-Krynicka from the Institute of Philosophy at the University of Wrocław; prof. A. Kiepas, prof. K.
