Research

The institute conducts qualitative and quantitative research of Slovak society and culture in a global context and in accordance with the theory and methodology of ethnology (urban ethnology, cultural heritage), sociology (sociology of family, tourism and consumption) and Slovak history. Our main research areas are:

  • sustainable urban development in a diversified world
  • consumer society and lifestyles
  • Slovakia’s cultural heritage and its revitalization
  • gender issues
  • Slovak history
  • literary history

The ISCS provides a platform for interdisciplinary cooperation between departments and faculties. It also works in close cooperation with other Slovak and foreign research institutes, especially with the Institute of Ethnology at the Slovak Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Ethnology of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic.

Members of the ISCS staff have completed several research projects financed by grant agencies of the Slovak Republic and the European Union, including OP Central Europe and the Sixth and the Seventh EU Framework Programmes. The latter focused on cultural and social changes in  modern society: conservation, preservation and presentation of cultural heritage, gender issues and career strategies for young researchers. Slovak research projects also have been focused on ethnological issues of material culture, socio-normative culture, urban ethnology and research areas concerning modern society (multiculturalism, multiethnicity, globalization, lifestyle, domestic tourism).

In cooperation with municipalities, the institute has organized several activities related to applied ethnology (publication of monographs and textbooks, seminars with representatives of municipalities and other organizations).

Since 2013 the institute has sponsored the academic journal Ethnological Discussions (Etnologické rozpravy). It has a long tradition and aims at covering current topics, primarily in ethnology and related disciplines. We strive to maintain the magazine's tradition, while creatively and comprehensively raising its academic calibre.
