Demonstration of Slovak and Hungarian identity manifestations in the towns of northern Slovakia in the 19th and early 20th century

Project information

Annotation of achieved result: Monograph "Public celebrations and historical memory in Hungary (1867 – 1914)" is the most important outcome of the research project. The publication researches public celebrations in 1867 – 1914 as a forming tool of historical memory in a public space of two chosen towns in northern Slovakia (Banská Bystrica, Zvolen) and two towns with southern location (in Lučenec, Rimavská Sobota). Using examples of dynastic, state and national celebrations and cultivating of personality cult, it shows differences in the functioning of historical memory. It also depicts the mechanism of separation of national identities from others, It evaluates meaning of celebrations for ruling elites and impact of their ideas on urban population. Wide heuristics, comparison of facts from researched towns and implementation of historical and anthropological theories have enabled to point to not only well-known social and political phenomena of that period, but also to distinction of attitudes and opinions at the local level.
