Reflection of Homer in Ancient Philosophy

Project information

Annotation of achieved result: The most important result of the research project has been the fact that, between two interpretative stances regarding the relation of mythos and logos, the research team tended to the continuity model, i. e. to the idea that the philosophical world view was not a negation of the former, mythological view, but its critical revaluation and further development. The issue of human position in the world and society, which had been central in Homeric epic, became one of the crucial topics for ancient philosophy as well. The same occurred with the issue of human virtue, which resounded especially among the sophists and in the Socratic circles. Homeric model of the hero evolved, in philosophy, into model of the sage (particularly in the Hellenistic period), when the physical aspect receded to the background in favor of spiritual perfection. In this perspective one should not wonder that even such criticizer of Homer and poets, as Plato, in his philosophical work, often resorted to producing new myths.
