Textbook of Philosophy of Art
Project information
The textbook Philosophy of Art: Analytical Tradition is genuinly introductory. It is intended for university students of Philosophy of Art, Aesthetics, Arts or to readers who are interested in thinking of art. Philosophy of art is one of the philosophical disicplines like epistemology, metaphysics, etics or philosophy of science. It explores philosophical aspects of art, including questions like: What defines art?, What is the nature of an artwork?, What is artistic value?. The book treat the Philosophy of Art as a different from the discipline of Aesthetics, which focus on the problems of definition of the aesthetic and the problem of aesthetic value. But there has to be said that both fields overlaps and has many in common. The textbook introduce selected problems and philosophical positions which are discussed in contemporary philosophical debates with emphasis on accessibility for wider audience. The book contains six chapters: 1. Art, Aesthetics, Philosophy; 2. Creation; 3. Representation and expression; 4. Identification; 5. Interpretation; 6. Appreciation and cognition. In the process of selecting the main problems for chapters we follow the idea of art as activity, spanning in time and certain context and containing several processes. Work of art is in the middle of these processes and answers to questions about character of these processes determinate it´s understanding. In the outlined approach some traditional problems of philosophy of art (e.g. ontology of art, definition of art) are parts of wider problems of chapters and some of them are coupled together to one chapter (e.g. representation and expression, appreciation and cognition) because they are closely related. This approach overcome fragmentary nature (on the first sight) of problems solutions in analytical philosophy of art and let us see particular problems in the wider context. Every chapter contains analysis and interpretation of selected work of art from works of contemporary Slovak artists. It provides us with opportunity to point out not only the philosophical consequences of analyzed positions but consequences to creation and interpretation too. Decision to analyze only Slovak artists is considered as a good way to connect Anglo-American philosophy of art with national context, The textbook offers longer summaries in English and Slovak - English glossary of the key terms. In addition to that in References there are always listed titles of cited books in English too. That serves to International students as well as to Slovak students to study from sources in original language.
