Christianization and the Rise of Christian Monarchy

This web-site is the result of a year-long interdisciplinary research project by an international team, funded by the AHRC. We drew on texts, archaeological evidence and art, in order to provide a complex analysis of the links between conversion and the consolidation of power in northern and central Europe. Our aim is to indicate what the sources are and how we can interpret them, but also to signal problems and uncertainties.

We constructed a questionnaire on the key aspects of Christianization and of the changes in power-structures: the responses for each country follow the same order under the same headings, so the material can be easily compared. You can search this site either by regions or by topics. Attached to the responses, you will also find lists of the relevant primary and secondary sources (bibliographies) as well as images.

We completed the collection and analysis of the material in 2004 and do not plan to update the website. See also our book: Nora Berend, ed. Christianization and the Rise of Christian Monarchy: Scandinavia, Central Europe and Rus' c. 900-1200 (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2007).
