Abstract
Swear and curse words in German and Croatian: A contrastive analysis using the example of the film „Fack ju Göthe 2“
This paper has undertakes a contrastive analysis of swear and curse words in Croatian and German language. The corpus from the German comedy „Fack Ju Göhte 2“ from 2015 serves as the object of research. After the first part of the article describes swear words as a component of the linguistic discipline of lexicology and the object of study of so-called maledictology, the role of stylistic levels in the use of this vocabulary and the usage-related differences and similarities between German and Croatian are discussed. In the second part, the curse words and swear words are first explored semantically and then explained pragmatically within the context. As part of this, translation variants into Croatian are suggested for each example. For the analysis, which is guided by the following online dictionaries (Deutsches Online-Wörterbuch, DO, and Digitales Wörterbuch der deutschen Sprache, DWDS), we also draw on our own linguistic experience, morpho-syntactic and stylistic devices (sarcasm, irony, exaggeration, understatement). For the purpose of comprehensible study and avoidance of misunderstandings, all curse and swear words within this paper are listed in their entirety.
