Abstract
Functions of Onyms in the Linguistic Landscape of Central Slovak towns (Banská Bystrica, Banská Štiavnica, Kremnica)
This paper examines the functions of onyms in the linguistic landscape of three Central Slovak towns: Banská Bystrica, Banská Štiavnica, and Kremnica. Each onym serves a basic identification and differentiation function. Additionally, within the linguistic landscape, onyms also perform a communicative function. This function varies across social contexts, and includes memorial, religious, commemorative, orientational, advertising, and commercial functions. Anthroponyms fulfill the memorial function by commemorating important figures and the commemorative function by expressing respect for the deceased. Teonyms serve a religious function by contributing to the worship of God and the glorification of God. Urbanonyms provide an orientation function by designating points in urban space. Firmonyms have an advertising function through product promotion and a commercial function in business activities. Onyms embody these functions in contemporary society.
