Abstract
Techniques, strategies and particularities of the audiovisual translation of documentary films
Our article focuses mainly on the analysis of both the particularities of audiovisual translation, to be more precise subtitling, and the techniques, strategies and specificities encountered during the creation of subtitles for the documentary film Peter Dvorský, screened at the Embassy of the Slovak Republic in Rome on 22 June 2023 and translated in collaboration with Zuzana Nemčíková, professor and lecturer of Slovak at “La Sapienza” University, and her student, Murillo Misacci Borges. The first chapter will focus primarily on the main aspects of subtitling, the possible impact that audiovisual translation can have on the audience, the issues related to the space and time constraints imposed by the medium, and the characteristics that distinguish documentary films. The second chapter will focus on the strategies and techniques typical of audiovisual translation, on the syntactic and lexical problems encountered during the subtitling of the documentary and on the commentary on the various translation choices. The contribution therefore also aims to propose possible solutions to common problems that may be encountered when translating audiovisual works from Slovak into Italian.
