Abstract
János Paap’s Language Manual: Six voice singing (1796)
In the aristocratic environment of the Enlightenment, the education of offspring in the hands of experts played an increasingly prominent role. Following the spirit and understanding of the time, György Festetics himself took care of the education of his child. He was familiar with the imperial and Hungarian educational policy situation and played a prominent role in the city of Keszthely at the end of the 18th century. In light of this, it is not surprising that the care of nurturing the minds of offspring with experts was widespread in aristocratic circles, also thanks to the Enlightenment era. These plans testify to a thorough knowledge of the pedagogical ideas of the Enlightenment. Paap János‘s language manual entitled: Hathangú ének avagy hat nyelveken folyó kérdezkedésekre s feleletekre egyformán elintéztetett magyar, deák,német, anglus, francia s olasz nemzeti beszélgetések (1796, Buda) is found in the family library Festetics. Paap János‘s language manual has a Hungarian title, but contains dialogues in six different languages: Hungarian, Latin, German, English, French and Italian. In my article, I focus on the detailed analysis of the manual from a historical, pedagogical and socio-cultural point of view. The daily life of members of aristocratic families must also be presented, underlining the importance of studying foreign languages.
