The Centenary of Italian Language Teaching in Hungary – Count Klebelsberg’s Speech in Rome
Abstract
In 1924, the teaching of Italian as a foreign language in Hungary celebrated its centenary. In the years following World War I, new avenues had to be sought for rebuilding the country and expanding its cultural relations. This task was undertaken by Count Kuno Klebelsberg, who, as a historian and Minister of Culture, played a decisive role in introducing Italian language teaching into the reformed Hungarian school system. The aim of this study is to present the arguments put forward by Minister Klebelsberg in his speech at La Sapienza University in Rome in March 1927 to explain the introduction of Italian language teaching. The study also deals with the Italian and Hungarian reactions to the minister's trip to Italy and his speech.
Keywords: italian language, history of Italian language teaching
