The She-Stories of Women Translators in Slovakia 1918–1968 (CfP 2/2026)

 

This special issue of the New Philological Revue 2/2026 is dedicated to research on the history of translation, women translators, and their cultural and social impact within the Slovak context. The aim of this forthcoming issue is to contribute to mapping the micro-historical, cultural, and social phenomena of the Slovak translation landscape, with particular emphasis on women translators who were, at some stage of their lives, connected to the Central Slovak region. Special attention is paid to the period from 1918 to 1968, which represents a dynamic phase in the formation of the Slovak translation environment under the influence of shifting political, cultural, and ideological conditions. This issue seeks to document the activities of women translators during this period, to foreground their contribution to the region's cultural development, and to evaluate their role in shaping the literary, linguistic, and broader cultural landscape within the context of the era.

We welcome contributions focusing primarily on:

• the lives and professional trajectories of women translators;
• analyses of translation work (from linguistic, poetological, or cultural perspectives);
• translation strategies and methods in historical context;
• the role of women translators in the cultural and social life of Slovak regions;
• translators' collaboration with institutions, publishers, and cultural associations;
• the influence of ideology and cultural policy on translation practice;
• micro-historical approaches to the history of translation ('history from below');
• translation as a social and cultural phenomenon in both regional and national contexts;
• the history of translation and the development of translation practice in Slovakia;
• questions of gender in translation and literary culture;
• the reception of translations and their impact on the Slovak literary scene;
• interdisciplinary approaches to translation research (literary studies, cultural studies, history, etc.).

 

Contributions may be submitted in Slovak or in another major world language (English, French, German, or Spanish), in accordance with the journal's editorial guidelines, which are available on the journal's website:
