ADMISSIONS
General information on the admissions process (bachelor’s and master's degree programmes)
For all applicants, the admissions process begins by submitting an electronic or printed application. Applicants may apply for multiple programmes, but they must submit a separate application for each programme they apply to. There is no limit on the number of submitted applications.
If applicants apply via electronic application, they are also obliged to send a printed application to the faculty. The printed application must be filled in, personally signed and include all required enclosures. An electronic application without a printed counterpart received by the admissions office is invalid.
The application must include:
- the applicant’s CV
- a notarized copy of the applicant’s secondary-school-leaving examination certificate (applies to applicants for bachelor's programmes who have completed secondary school)
- a notarized copy of the applicant’s bachelor’s-level state examination diploma (applies to applicants for master's programmes who have completed their bachelor’s studies)
- a copy of the applicant’s bachelor’s diploma supplement or, if they have not yet completed their bachelor’s studies, the transcript of records from their bachelor’s studies (this applies to master’s-programme applicants from other universities)
- a copy of the proof of payment for the application fee (paid via bank transfer)
a certificate of fitness from a doctor (applies to programme: Teaching of English Language and Literature and Teaching of Physical Education)
- a certificate of proficiency in Slovak as a foreign/second language at the required level (at least B2 or C1 depending on the study programme criteria) issued by a language school included in the network of schools and educational institutions of the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic (registered public language schools and private language schools) – required for foreign applicants to bachelor’s programmes (except for applicants to the programme Slovak for the Linguistic and Cultural Competence of International Students) and foreign applicants to master’s programmes who studied in a language other than Slovak at the bachelor’s level
- specifically required enclosures for the programmes Slovak for the Linguistic and Cultural Competence of International Students
Applicants for bachelor's programmes who are taking their secondary-school-leaving examination in the same year as they are applying and are applying for a programme with no entrance examination must deliver a notarized copy of their secondary-school-leaving examination certificate to the faculty’s admissions office by 13 June 2024.
Applicants for bachelor’s studies who have been granted asylum, subsidiary protection or temporary protection may demonstrate their attainment of full secondary education or full secondary vocational education by providing a declaration on their honour with the requested information. The declaration of honour and official document confirming the granting of asylum, subsidiary protection or temporary protection must be delivered by hand or via post to the faculty’s admissions office by 13 June 2024. If an applicant demonstrates their attained education with a declaration of honour, they must also complete a general academic prerequisite test administered by the company Scio. The applicant does not need to provide evidence of the results of the general academic prerequisite test, but when filling out the application form for the test at https://www.scio.sk/, they must give consent to the provision of the test results to the faculty. The applicant must also fulfil the admission requirements of the particular study programme they choose.
Applicants for master's programmes must deliver, without written notice from the faculty, a notarized copy of their diploma and bachelor's degree state examination certificate to the faculty’s admissions office by 15 July 2024 (this applies to applicants from other universities).
Applicants who do not present any evidence of meeting the basic admission requirements by the given deadline will be accepted conditionally. Applicants are obliged to present a notarized copy of a secondary-school-leaving examination certificate (applicants for bachelor’s programmes)/a notarized copy of a diploma and bachelor’s-degree state-examination certificate(this applies to master’s-programme applicants from other universities) by the day of enrolment at the very latest; otherwise they cannot begin their studies.
Applicants who have completed a previous level of education abroad are obliged to prove the recognition of any education certificate obtained outside the Slovak Republic. The admitted applicant is obliged to present proof of recognition for their education certificate no later than the day of enrolment.
Basic admission requirements for bachelor’s studies:
‒ completed secondary-school education or secondary vocational education with a school-leaving certificate
‒ meeting the requirements of the admission proceedings
Basic admission requirements for master’s studies:
‒ a university degree at the bachelor’s or master’s level
‒ meeting the requirements of the admission proceedings
Basic admission requirements for foreign applicants to bachelor’s and master’s programmes:
‒ successful passing of the entrance examination
‒ confirmation of acceptance of the applicant’s certificate of education completed abroad at the required level of education (with the exception of certificates from the Czech Republic, for which a confirmation is not needed)
Admission requirements for bachelor’s studies
Bachelor’s Degree Programmes in the Field of Study Teacher Training and Education Science:
Teaching of English Language and Literature
English language proficiency at the B2 level or higher according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages is a prerequisite for studying Teaching of English Language and Literature in every programme combination. Applicants must complete a general academic prerequisites test, part of the National Comparative Exams administered by the company Scio, in place of an entrance exam. Results from a previous Scio test no older than three years will also be accepted. Applicants will be accepted in the order of their achieved percentile on the test until the planned number of accepted applicants for the given combination has been reached.
Applicants who present a certificate obtained by completing at least one of the following examinations will earn the maximum score in the admission proceedings (without being required to take the Scio test):
- University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations, Certificate in Advanced English
- University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations, Certificate of Proficiency in English
- University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations, First Certificate in English – score A
- IELTS – International English Language Testing System – minimum level 6.5
- secondary-school-leaving examination on the English language
– level C1 – final result excellent, very good
– level B2 – external portion minimum 85% mark + oral portion result “excellent”
If the number of applicants does not exceed the planned number of accepted students, the requirement to take the entrance exam will be waived.
Teaching of French Language and Literature
No entrance examination. French language proficiency at the A2 level or higher according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages is a prerequisite for studying Teaching of French Language and Literature in every programme combination.
Applicants must demonstrate their level of French language proficiency by presenting at least one of the following documents:
- an internationally recognized DELF or DALF French language diploma
- secondary-school-leaving examination in the French language – level B1
- a certificate of completion from a French bilingual section of a gymnasium
- a French language proficiency certificate from a public or private language school in Slovakia or from a foreign institution that is authorized to issue French language proficiency certificates

Slovak for the Linguistic and Cultural Competence of International Students
This programme is only open to foreign applicants. As these applicants have completed their secondary education outside of Slovakia, they must present documentation of recognition of their secondary education completion certificate. Applications for this programme must include a letter of motivation in English no longer than one standard page. The motivation letter must contain:
- basic information about the applicant’s previous studies and interests, as well as the reasons why they are interested in studying in this programme and in studying in Slovakia
- previous academic achievements (include photocopies of the relevant documents, e.g. certificates, awards from competitions, etc.)
- why the applicant is an eligible candidate for this programme
- future plans (after graduation) and how these plans relate to the study of Slovak
Motivation letters will be evaluated based on the following criteria: originality, form, content, originality of content and style, and creativity. If the applicant does not provide a letter of motivation by the application deadline, their application will be considered invalid and will be returned to them. The admissions committee decides the order in which applicants are admitted based on an anonymous evaluation of their letters of motivation.

Admission requirements for doctoral studies
According to Section 56 (3) of Act No. 131/2002 Coll. on Higher Education (the Higher Education Act), completion of a master’s degree programme, or a programme combining bachelor’s and master’s studies in accordance with Section 53 (3) of the Higher Education Act, is a basic requirement for admission to a doctoral programme. Further admission requirements are specified individually for every programme in accordance with Section 57 (1) of the Higher Education Act (see www.ff.umb.sk/en – Admission and study – Postgraduate degree).
Applicants must register for one of the doctoral dissertation topics listed under individual programmes.
The entrance examination takes place before the committee appointed by the Dean of the MBU Faculty of Arts. During the entrance examination, the applicant must demonstrate the ability to engage in independent creative activity in the specific field of study and in relation to the doctoral dissertation topic they wish to register for.
Requirements for post-master's rigorosum examinations
Master’s degree holders may take a post-master’s “rigorosum” examination, which includes a dissertation defence in the field of their university studies. To successfully complete the rigorosum exam and dissertation defence, the candidate must demonstrate, by means of an original work of scholarship, a deep understanding of and broad grounding in their field of study, an ability to independently assimilate new findings from research and practice, and an ability to put their acquired knowledge into practice in a creative manner.

Graduates of bachelor’s-level teaching programmes are primarily prepared to successfully continue their studies in a corresponding or related master’s programme.
Graduates of master’s-level teaching programmes are qualified to teach at the second level of primary school and at all types of secondary schools and eight-year grammar schools, as well as language and art schools. Their theoretical knowledge can also be utilised in social, cultural, public-awareness and physical-education institutions as well as on editorial boards, in advertising companies, in research institutions and in the commercial sector.
Students of bachelor’s-level non-teaching programmes can work in the state, public or private sector as experts in the area of their programme of study or continue their studies in a corresponding or related master’s programme.
Graduates of master’s-level non-teaching programmes are prepared to work in management positions in spheres such as social institutions, diplomacy, foreign trade, tourism, culture, educational institutions and EU institutions.

- Consider whether they meet the demands of university study in terms of:
a) knowledge
b) technological and personal preparedness and motivation
c) the demands of the content, extent and form of study chosen
d) the requirements stated by the faculty
e) limitations resulting from a disability
- Contact the faculty coordinator for students with special needs.
- Submit a report from an expert, e.g. doctor, psychologist, speech therapist, school psychology, school speech therapist or special-needs educator (more information can be found in the Student Handbook for Students with Special Needs at Matej Bel University in Banská Bystrica).
- Fill out the Application for prospective students with special needs on the alteration of the form and manner of the admission examination with the appropriate professional documentation demonstrating the applicant’s specific needs (if the admission proceedings include an examination).
The final decision to enrol in the chosen programme is made by the applicant. By making this decision, the applicant assumes responsibility for the potential risk that they may not be able to continue in their studies.
