The Department of Slovak Language and Communication is one of the essential scholarly, educational and sociocultural parts of the faculty and the university. It has operated continually and successfully since 1954.

The department's interest is focused on the issues of natural language, linguistics, interpersonal communication, and culture of communication.

Over the last six decades, the department has prepared experts on Slovak linguistics, teaching, culture, arts, mass media and academic, social and cultural life. Since mid-80s the department has conducted creative interdisciplinary research via the Banská Bystrica sociolinguistic school in cooperation with Slovak and foreign linguistics teams and institutions from Slovakia and other countries (Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Croatia, Germany, Poland, Romania, Russia, Slovenia, Serbia, Ukraine, etc.).
