Demarcation in Ancient and Contemporary Epistemology

Annotation of achieved result: Researchers reached the conclusion that the criteria of demarcation can be maintained and defended only in a modest form, i.e. not as the criteria separating science “as such” (or knowledge “as such”) from non-science (or “pure belief”), but only as the criteria separating different scientific disciplines. As a result of these findings, the researchers concluded that they failed to defend any universal criterion of demarcation, which would determine necessary and sufficient conditions of science or of (the real) knowledge. These conclusions discredited universalistic ambitions, but not the position of realism. Even though no successful universal criteria of demarcation are known, the partial criteria are known, can be defended and are not relativistic. Their nonrelativism lies in the fact that they are fulfilled not exclusively by the involvement of a community, a historical era, a cultural background, etc. but also by the way the world is which is objective (i.e. independent of the community, etc.).
